Falter 03:50
We falter, And overcome. Still we stand tall, As embers fall. Rise to the call. You crossed the line. Now answer, why? You had your turn, Now watch it burn. Come take your place, Let’s raise the stakes. Face your fears, Don’t lose your grip. Don’t falter now, Don’t fail me now. Don't fail me now.

about

Falter was first written in early 2017. It was during a time when I was having a huge crisis of confidence in both the quality of my music and my ability to continue working on musical endeavours full-time, and I felt like I was in a place where I was constantly failing and having to pick myself up over and over again.

Lyrically it's a pretty straight-forward "shit happens, overcome it, deal with it" theme mixed with a bit of a sense of "I'm trying my hardest and it's not enough, and I'm tired of other people making this look easy". During the busier moments I'd initially planned to write something resembling (shock!) an actual chorus, but I just couldn't get it to work and, in frustration, ended up recording something very similar to what ended up in the final song. In hindsight, I feel like it captured that sense of pent-up frustration quite nicely!

I've always had a particular fondness for modern prog metal, and this song was a bit of an attempt to jam my 2017 cinematic/trailer production-work stylings and that more metal-y leaning together and see what pops out. For the longest time I thought it was disjointed, and it was only after I posted an early demo to Soundcloud that I realised "yeah, but I actually quite like that about it". It's a track of contrasts, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
